The craft
Gold plating over a base metal. The finish looks the same as solid gold at a fraction of the price, with one condition: plating is a layer, and like any layer it lasts as long as it is looked after.
Care
Put it on last and take it off first: perfume, hairspray and cream are what wears plating down fastest. Off for swimming and showering — chlorine and salt water are the worst thing that can happen to it.
Raw emerald keeps the matrix of the stone, which is more fragile than a polished cut. Avoid sharp knocks against hard surfaces and never clean it in an ultrasonic bath.
